Things to do in Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a small city but one which packs plenty in. Stroll along the beach, hit the shops or even board a warship. The natural island of Portsea forms the main part of the city, while to the south lies the area of Southsea.

Check out our suggestions below, featuring the places to explore, as well as Portsmouth’s top attractions.

Mary Rose Museum

The Mary Rose, one of Henry VIII’s ships, sailed the seas for 34 years in the early 1500s. It was raised from the bottom of the sea in 1982 and took many years to be restored.

This multi-award winning museum is one of the most famous places to go in Portsmouth and doesn’t disappoint. Roughly 19,000 historical relics have been discovered over 30 years of painstaking work by archaeologists. There’s always the opportunity to learn more about the Tudor era and seafaring tradition. Due to being underwater for 437 years, many of the artefacts are restricted to controlled temperatures in order to stop them from degrading further.

A short walk from the main entrance to the Historic Dockyard, you can gain your tickets for this unique museum at the Visitor Centre, in addition to strolling aboard other ships within the area. Portsmouth provides plenty of opportunity to learn about the Royal Navy, whether it’s their past, present or future.

Gunwharf Quays

Take your favourite tipple whilst overlooking the Solent. With some of the city’s best bars and nightlife you could wind up dancing into the early hours without setting foot outside this buzzing hub.

Should you come during the day, however, the area is home to Gunwharf Quays Premium Retail Outlet, containing 95 designer stores, along with a 14-screen cinema and bowling alley – one of the city’s entertainment highlights. The beauty of the outlet means you can get the most from your money, as stores have up to 60% off regular prices. If shops don’t float your boat then you can hire a boat instead, a great option for families.

Blue Reef Aquarium

Discover a huge range of underwater organisms and creatures at this award-winning attraction. There are 40 exhibits, including an underwater tunnel and multiple opportunities to witness feeding time. Encounter beautiful seahorses, a tropical shark or even a deadly dart frog.

It’s one of the top places to go in Portsmouth, in particular for family entertainment and inquisitive minds. There are regular events throughout the year, including special film-release parties.

Clarence Pier Southsea

Open all year round, this entertainment park is one of the best along the coastline. For the adventurous, the Sky Trail offers a chance to face your fears with high ropes, ladders and walking the plank. A traditional arcade provides excitement for all ages, whereas the tension of the 2-penny drop isn’t one for the faint hearted.

Fort Nelson

Head to the hills to take in Fort Nelson, Portsmouth’s imposing Victorian sea defences.

The newly restored Royal Armouries house a collection of 350 giant guns, from ancient cannon to huge World War 2 anti-aircraft guns. There’s also a free museum and galleries for you to learn more about the national arsenal. Stand on the battlements and enjoy the sea views or go underground to the network of tunnels where ammunition was once stored. There’s also a café and souvenir shop.
